Amigurumi Panda

A cuddly, beginner-friendly panda plushie pattern

Pandas have a special kind of charm — round, soft, and always looking a little sleepy. This pattern turns that charm into a huggable amigurumi you can make in a weekend. It’s a great project if you’ve made a basic amigurumi animal before and want to try shaping a snout and working in two colors.

The finished panda stands about 11 inches tall and works up in a soft bulky-weight yarn, so the stitches go by quickly without sacrificing that plush, squeezable texture.

• Yarn needle
• Polyester fiberfill stuffing
• Pair of 12mm safety eyes

Rnd 1: With Color B, 6 sc in MC. (6)

Rnd 2: Inc around. (12)

Begin stuffing firmly. Continue adding stuffing as the head closes.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Cinch the remaining stitches closed and weave in the end.

Snout

Fasten off with a long tail. Stuff lightly and sew centered on the lower-front of the head, about a third of the way up from the chin.

Ears (make 2)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Flatten and sew to the top of the head, on either side, angled slightly forward.

Eye Patches (make 2)

Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 6, work an oval: sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc, 3 sc in last ch; working on opposite side of chain, 3 sc, inc. (12)

Rnd 2: Sc around. (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Attach a safety eye near the outer edge of each patch before sewing the patches above the snout, angled slightly outward.

Arms (make 2)

Rnd 1: With Color A, 6 sc in MC. (6)

Stuff lightly, flatten the opening, and sc closed. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing to the body.

Legs (make 2)

Stuff firmly at the base and lightly toward the top, leaving the last inch unstuffed so the leg can bend and attach easily to the body.

Body

With Color A, join both legs together by working across the top loops of both, similar to joining amigurumi legs in most animal patterns.

Mark placement for both arms and attach as you work the next round, sc-ing through both body and arm stitches.

Rnd 17: Sc around, attaching arms. (36)

Stuff the body firmly, then sew the head securely to the top opening, using pins to check alignment before stitching.

Tail

Rnd 1: With Color B, 5 sc in MC. (5)

Rnds 2–3: Sc around. (5)

Fasten off leaving a tail. Stuff lightly and sew to the back of the body, just above where the legs meet.

Face Details

Using black scrap yarn, embroider a small triangular nose at the tip of the snout, then stitch a simple curved mouth beneath it. With white scrap yarn, add a few small highlight stitches to the eye patches if desired. For extra dimension, you can gently tack the lower eye area to the base of the head with a few small stitches, pulling just enough to create soft indentation around the eyes.
